Fall Maternity + Family Style Guide-What to Wear
From Suzanne Barber Images
your trusted Frisco Texas Maternity Photographer

Fall in North Texas brings soft golden light, muted foliage, and a warm, cozy vibe—the perfect backdrop for capturing maternity and family portraits. As your Little Elm and Frisco Texas maternity photographer, I always encourage my clients to plan outfits thoughtfully so your session feels cohesive, timeless, and stress-free. Below is a client guide plus shopping links to recommended pieces.
Picture
1. Start with a Color Palette & Mood
  • Pick 4–6 complementary tones: rust, terracotta, mustard, olive, cream, taupe, muted teal, warm brown.
  • Let one piece (usually mom’s dress) be the focal color; let the rest of the family lean into neutrals, textures, or subtle echoes.
  • Steer clear of bright neons, bold logos, and overly busy prints (unless used sparingly).
  • Texture is your friend: think knits, gauze, lace, raw denim, suede, crochet details.

2. Mom’s Dress: The Anchor Piece
     Here’s what to look for:
  • A maxi or midi length (with side slits or flow) that moves beautifully.
  • Smocking, lace trim, or a defined waist to frame the silhouette.
  • Soft florals or boho prints (avoid giant, high-contrast prints).
  • Optional layering: a lightweight shawl, kimono, or a neutral cardigan.

3. Dad’s Outfit: Jeans or Khaki + Neutrals to complement mom’s look:
  • Bottoms: medium or dark wash jeans, or khaki / beige chinos.
  • Tops: cream, oatmeal, olive, chambray, or a soft plaid shirt. Keep it simple and avoid bold prints or logos.
  • Accessories / layering: a knit vest, textured sweater, or a casual jacket in taupe or tan.
  • Shoes: brown leather boots, desert boots, casual loafers.

4. Kids’ Outfits (Girl & Boy) Let’s keep the look sweet, cohesive, and not overdone.
  • Girl: a cream or soft blush knit sweater + a muted floral skirt or skinny corduroy pants. Add a simple cardigan or tights if it’s cool.
  • Boy: a knit romper, soft cable knit sweater suit, or a muted plaid shirt with beige pants.
  • Baby: If your little one will need to be held for all the pictures, it is a good idea to look for one-piece items like a romper that won't ride up or get bunched
  • Keep kids in solids or simple textures if mom’s dress is the print focus.
6. Tips for the Day of Session
  • Have a spare neutral layer (cream cardi or scarf) for color balancing.
  • Try the outfits on ahead of time to be sure everything is a good fit.
  • Dress children in layers (easy to remove if warm).
  • Keep mom comfortable: avoid dresses that are too tight in the belly or that restrict sitting/posing.

Adorable Older Baby Photos {Denton, TX baby photographer} Suzanne Barber Images

This handsome little man came to the studio from Denton, Tx to get newborn photos done, even though he was a few weeks older than the usual. He did great, and we still got some sleepy pictures. And some cute ones with his little eyes open, too. Mom wanted a neutral palette, so we did tan, browns and whites. He brought a special teddy that was bigger than him! So, of course, we got a photo of him napping with Teddy too. He wore his own outfit from home for a casual cozy look.
If you aren't able to get your newborn photos done in the first 1-3 weeks, as recommended, it is still possible to get great portraits. Just know that we can't always do the curled up sleepy poses, or things like getting chin on hands. I have a few bigger props that we can use for an older baby. But, when possible, try to book early in the 3rd trimester to get on the schedule early! If you are in the Denton area and interested in bringing your baby to my home studio for newborn photography, please get in touch!  901-830-9813 Suzanne Barber Images, Denton Newborn Photography

I had the sweetest little visitor at Suzanne Barber Images recently — a beautiful baby girl we’ll call Baby J, and she absolutely stole the show. We had done maternity photos for this family at Adriatica in McKinney, TX. So, it was great to get to meet her finally!
Photographing newborns is always special, but Baby J’s session was especially smooth and serene. From her peaceful expressions to her delicate little features, everything came together beautifully.
She was a little older, since they had gotten sick before she could come in for photos. But, luckily, she was a good sleeper. We were able to get plenty of great shots in props and on the fur background.
